New to Hot Yoga? Here’s What to Expect!

You’re about to begin an experience as unique as you are. Be kind to yourself—learning takes time, and even experienced yogis are always growing. Come with an open mind, ready to move, breathe, sweat, and enjoy the process. Forget about doing it “perfectly” and just show up! At Root Down Yoga, we’re here to support and celebrate your growth every step of the way.

What is the temperature of the class?
Our practice space is heated to 95 degrees, similar to a hot summer day in La Crosse. As the room fills with yogis, expect both the temperature and humidity to rise accordingly.
Not Flexible? No Problem!
You don’t need to be physically flexible to do yoga, just open to new possibilities! Focus on breathing, moving, and honoring where you are today. Yoga reveals both your strengths and areas for growth, helping you build resilience as you embrace the process. Let go, and you’ll be amazed as tension eases and your strength and mobility improve over time.
What do I wear?
Wear lightweight, comfortable clothing you don’t mind sweating in. Classes are heated to 95 degrees, so synthetic fabrics are ideal as they wick moisture better than cotton, which can become heavy when wet. Bringing a dry change of clothes for after class is a great idea!
What do I bring?
You’ll need a yoga mat, towel, and water bottle. Don’t have them yet? No problem! We’ll provide them for your first class free of charge. After that, mats and towels are available to rent for $2 each. Prefer your own gear? We sell yoga supplies right at the studio!
How much water should I drink?
Always arrive to class well-hydrated. Aim for at least 64 ounces of water daily, more if you’re active. Dehydration can happen quickly, so it’s important to stay on top of it. We recommend drinking 12-24 ounces in the hour before class and sipping water as needed during class. Afterward, replenish with an additional 12-16 ounces of water or an electrolyte replacer.
What are the benefits of a heated class?
Think of glass, bend it, and it will break. Add heat, and it becomes flexible, allowing it to be molded. The body reacts similarly to heat. It helps muscles stretch more easily and reduces the risk of injury. As for sweating, it’s a natural detoxifier that cleanses the body. Trust us – you’ll soon come to enjoy the process!
Will I lose weight? Build muscle?
The amazing thing about hot Vinyasa Yoga is that it will completely transform your body, mind, and spirit. If you need to lose weight, you will. If you need to build muscle, you will. It all depends on the shift your body needs to return to its most natural state. This system of yoga burns calories and awakens every cell in your body.
Can I eat before class?
For the best experience, practice on a mostly empty stomach. Avoid heavy meals 1-2 hours before class. Light snacks like fruit, yogurt, or energy bars are great options. Most importantly, drink plenty of water throughout the day to stay hydrated before class.
What should I drink to replace electrolytes?
Our drink of choice to revitalize and replace electrolytes is coconut water! It is the most natural way to get your sugars and salts back after sweating. Gatorade, Ultima and NUUN are also good options.
How often should I practice yoga?
To build a strong foundation, aim to complete 10-15 classes within your first 30 days. This will give you a solid start for growth. Consistency is key for lasting benefits like increased energy, reduced stress, and a strong, painfree body. Practicing 2-3 days a week will bring steady progress, while 4-6 days a week can lead to life-changing transformation.
Is Hot Yoga safe for expectant mothers?
As with any exercise program, it’s important to consult your physician and listen to your body for signs of injury or overwork. Please talk to your doctor before starting hot Vinyasa Yoga or continuing your yoga practice.
